Job Description

RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF THE MUHC
The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) is a world-renowned biomedical and hospital research centre. Located in Montreal, Quebec, the Institute is the research arm of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. The RI-MUHC is supported in part by the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Santé (FRQS).

Position summary
We are seeking a highly motivated, organized and detail-oriented individual with excellent communication skills. The individual will work under the direct supervision of the Biobank Platform Director and the Project Coordinator. The biobank platform has a mission to collect and store biological samples and associated clinical and research data from participants at the MUHC who have provided informed consent, and to manage and accommodate requests for samples and data from internal and external Investigators. The successful applicant will play a key role in the operation of this platform.

General Duties
• Participate in the operations of an automated data- and bio-bank,
• Obtain informed consent from participants –explain study and answer questions,
• Administer questionnaires to study subjects and record their answers,
• Keep track of consented participants hospital visits,
• Communicate with health care providers as to what specimen needs to be collected,
• Collect from the health care provider: tissue, blood, bodily fluid and other biological samples from patients who have provided informed consent for biobanking,
• Process collected samples according to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and store in standard and automated biobank systems,
• Update SOPs upon request,
• Retrieve stored samples upon request,
• Keep the inventory up to date,
• Perform analyses of stored samples,
• Retrieve clinical information from medical charts and electronic records and enter specific information into biobank data systems,
• Perform database maintenance and quality control,
• Prepare reports on completed tasks,
• Complete all other relevant tasks as assigned by supervisor and/or director.

Education / Experience

• B.Sc., M.Sc. preferred. Foreign medical graduates (with valid work visa) are welcome to apply,
• Previous experience working in a clinical/healthcare environment, including interaction with patients and clinical personnel (nurses, technicians and physicians),
• Ability to work independently,
• Strong interpersonal skills and motivation,
• Good communication skills (English and French, spoken and written),
• Working knowledge of and experience with basic laboratory techniques,
• Working knowledge of PC word processing and spreadsheet software.

Additional information

Status: Full time
Pay Scale: Commensurate with education and experience
Work Shift: Work schedule is not fixed and subject to change as per work requirements. Due to the nature of functions and responsibilities, may be required to work outside normal hours (9 am to 5 pm), e.g. early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
Work Site: CTB–Glen site and MGH site
